THE STORY
Although lantern is primarily used as protective enclosure for a light source, today it has developed to serve other purposes such as a symbol of festivity and comes in various shapes, sizes and colours.
It transcends beyond many cultures and has been adapted to bring different meanings for each of the cultures. In eastern culture, for example in China, red lantern traditionally symbolizes good fortune and joy, and often finds during festive periods. In many parts of Asia, paper lanterns are decorated with words/drawings and hung outside businesses to attract attention.
In western culture, lantern is also often used in traditional festival celebrations. The “Festa della Rificolona” in Spain, “Sankt-Martins-Umzug” in German-speaking & Dutch-speaking parts of Europe, both are using colourful paper lantern to honour different historical occasions.

Lantern Theatre @ Esplanade Singapore is designed to be a distinctive landmark that shines over the waterfront of Marina Bay area and create an attractive venue for Singapore and international art performances.
